Youth Engagement In Climate Change Mitigation and Advocacy

Community and Location

Community: Buea Municipality

Location: South West Region, Cameroon

Focus of the Project

  • Education and Awareness — training and sensitizing youth on climate change, its causes, impacts, and solutions.

  • Community Involvement — engaging youths in local climate-friendly initiatives such as tree planting, recycling, and clean-up campaigns.

  • Advocacy and Leadership — building youth capacity to advocate for climate action and environmental sustainability in schools, communities, and online spaces.

Basic Statement of How the Project Will Be Done (Step by Step)

Step 1 : Planning and Mobilization

Identify and collaborate with local youth groups, schools, and community-based organizations. Form a Climate Action Youth Team (10–15 members). Develop a detailed work plan and resource list.

Step 2: Training and Capacity Building

Organize a 2-day workshop on climate change awareness and leadership. Invite experts or NGOs working on environmental sustainability. Teach topics like renewable energy, waste management, tree planting, and advocacy skills.

Step 3: Community Action Phase

Launch tree planting campaigns, conduct clean-up drives, and promote waste segregation and recycling initiatives.

Step 4: Advocacy and Awareness

Hold community sensitization events (drama, debates, posters, and media talks). Use social media platforms to spread climate awareness among youth. Encourage youth-led campaigns promoting eco-friendly practices.

Step 5: Monitoring and Evaluation

Track participation and project impact through surveys and attendance lists. Assess environmental changes (e.g., number of trees planted, waste collected). Prepare a final project report and share outcomes with stakeholders.

Measurable Goals / Expected Outcomes

  • At least 200 youths trained on climate change awareness and leadership.

  • 500 trees planted across Buea Municipality.

  • 4 community clean-up exercises successfully carried out.

  • Increased youth participation in environmental decision-making and advocacy.

  • Creation of one functional youth climate action club to sustain project activities.

Summary Statement

This project seeks to empower young people in Buea Municipality to become active participants in climate change mitigation and advocacy. Through education, community engagement, and leadership training, the project will foster a new generation of environmentally conscious youth committed to building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Cameroon.
