Background
Water is a basic human need, yet millions of people globally, especially in developing communities, lack access to safe and clean water. Poor water quality contributes to waterborne diseases, reduced livelihood productivity, and environmental degradation.
In Nigeria, many communities rely on rivers, wells, and boreholes without consistent testing or treatment. Knowledge gaps on water quality often lead to unsafe practices such as drinking untreated water, poor waste disposal, and ignorance of contamination risks. Strengthening community awareness is therefore crucial to building healthier societies and a healthier planet.
Problem Statement
In Oka Community, there is little information about how much residents know about water quality and its effect on their health and environment. Without adequate knowledge, unsafe practices persist and sustainable water use remains a challenge.
Project Goal
To assess and improve community knowledge of water quality and its impact on health, hygiene, and sustainable living.
Objectives
To evaluate the level of knowledge residents have about water quality.
To identify misconceptions and gaps in community awareness.
To promote basic knowledge of safe water practices.
To contribute to World Water Hub’s mission of healthier water and a healthier planet.
Awareness Activity: After collecting responses, share basic knowledge with participants on how to keep water safe (e.g., boiling, covering storage containers, avoiding waste near water sources).
Expected Outcomes
Baseline information on community knowledge of water quality.
Improved awareness among respondents on safe water practices.
Data that can support future water projects in the community.
Contribution to World Water Hub’s vision for cleaner and safer water worldwide.
Conclusion
This project will provide insight into the current level of community knowledge on water quality and promote small but significant changes in awareness and safe water practices. As a World Water Hub Ambassador, this initiative will serve as a grassroots contribution to the global mission of ensuring access to safe water and protecting the environment for future generations.
