Mula Mutha Revival

Community and Location

Mundwa Community in Pune

Description and Purpose

In 2021, the Mula Mutha Revival team created a questionnaire for primary research in which we interviewed locals around the Mula Mutha River as a way to not only promote awareness in the community but also to learn about the concerns of community members. During these conversations, one person said, "college students come and do this project for some time and then are done, [they leave and forget about the issue].”

This comment has significantly guided our thinking about the work we do and how we should do it. It has lit a fire beneath us and motivated us to not be another data point in this trend, but more importantly, taught us about the attitude of the community in regards to cleaning the river.  We genuinely care about the individuals and the problem.

Next, we implemented cleanup drives and awareness campaigns to immediately remove the waste near the river, but ultimately, we observed that it was not effective, so we had to try a different strategy. After reflecting on what would be more sustainable and effective, we planned short courses. At the start, we will focus on high school students and discuss topics like global warming and environmental issues in real-life contexts, such as the pollution of the Mula Mutha River.

We will cover topics like greenhouse gas emissions, plastic pollution, and the connection between agricultural runoff and river pollution. After assessing how the courses in the high school went, we would hopefully build a collection of short courses designed for middle school students.

The Goal

  • Prepare a learning Environment packet (Short courses) for children of grade 4-7

  • Connect with other school, experts to know what the school lacks

  • Continue having cleaning drives and campaigns in the area

Measurable Outcomes

Quantitative Outcome: Measuring the amount of garbage we collect, number of volunteers

Qualitative Outcome:

(1) Experience and what the community feels

(2) The effectiveness of -The short course - This would mean getting feedback on them from other experts.

Tentative Outline Of The Project

  • Look at other existing resources for the short courses (Focus on one short course at a time)

  • Reach out to the other organizations and see if there is a need for this, and the scope for modification

  • Feedback Time
